03Character Profile

Background
Joseph is raised by his grandmother Erina and Speedwagon. His enemies are the ancient Pillar Men, superhuman beings whose kind created the Stone Mask. Their appearance sets up a confrontation between a modern young man and powerful beings from antiquity.

Personality
Unlike his grandfather's steady, gentlemanly nature, Joseph is flamboyant and energetic. He likes solving problems with the least effort possible, even resorting to shortcuts, but shows a strong sense of justice when it counts. He both respects and fears his grandmother and deeply values personal bonds, making him well liked among friends and family. Even in old age, he retains his sharp tongue and is renowned as one of the series' clever tacticians.

04Abilities
Hamon
In Battle Tendency, Joseph's main ability is Hamon. He can channel it through everyday objects such as bottle caps, hair, drinking glasses, and steel balls to defend himself, reflect attacks, or walk on water. He also uses techniques such as Overdrive and Zoom Punch. When Stands are introduced in Part 3, Hamon takes a secondary role.
Combat Tricks
Joseph is best known for his improvised tricks: pretending to flee, playing dead, using sleight of hand, and predicting an opponent's next words to throw them off balance. These tactics repeatedly help him turn the tables when he is greatly outmatched.
Stand: Hermit Purple
Joseph's Stand, awakened later in life, is Hermit Purple, named after the Hermit tarot card. It takes the form of thorny vines and can produce spirit photographs through media such as cameras and televisions, revealing distant people and events. It can also turn sand into a map and manipulate electrical appliances. Although its ratings are modest, its versatility makes it a useful support Stand when paired with Joseph's strategic thinking.
The vines are also physical tools: Joseph can swing from them, bind objects and conduct Hamon through them as protection against a vampire. He initially smashes cameras to obtain spirit photographs, but later uses other media, such as televisions, without destroying them.

05History
Story spoilers
Early Life and New York
Joseph's father dies young. His mother becomes a wanted woman after seeking revenge, changes her name, and leaves, so Joseph grows up believing that both his parents are dead. After moving to New York at eighteen, he meets Smokey Brown. A battle with Straizo, who has become a vampire, then reveals the existence of the Pillar Men.
Mexico and the Awakening of the Pillar Men
Searching for Speedwagon, Joseph infiltrates a Nazi camp. Working with Stroheim, he exposes Santana to sunlight and turns him to stone. He then travels to Italy and meets Caesar. Their initial mutual dislike gradually becomes a fighting partnership. In Rome, however, they discover that the other three Pillar Men have awakened, and Joseph is implanted with poison-filled rings that will dissolve after a set time.

Hamon Training and the Arena Battles
In Venice, Joseph receives formal Hamon training from Lisa Lisa. During this period, he defeats Esidisi, but Caesar dies in a battle with Wamuu. Later, at an ancient arena, Joseph defeats Wamuu in a chariot race. When Lisa Lisa falls into a trap and the Red Stone of Aja is stolen, he rescues his teacher. Finally, he lures Kars, who has evolved into the Ultimate Life Form, toward a volcano and uses its eruption to send him beyond Earth. Joseph miraculously survives and marries Suzi Q.

The Journey against Dio and Later Life
Decades later, signs of Dio's return emerge and Joseph awakens a Stand capable of spirit photography. When his daughter Holy falls into a coma because she cannot control her Stand, Joseph joins his grandson Jotaro and their companions as the Stardust Crusaders and sets off for Egypt. In 1999, at seventy-nine, he travels to Morioh in Japan and meets his son Josuke Higashikata. During this visit, he also adopts the invisible baby Shizuka Joestar. Afterward, he gradually withdraws from the main story.
