03Appearance and Character

Jonathan Joestar
Jonathan Joestar.

Jonathan is tall and powerfully built, standing 195 centimeters in his youth. He has dark hair and a determined gaze. His clothes have an aristocratic air and often feature decorative shoulder guards. Gentle yet resolute, he embodies the traditional heroic protagonist.

04Abilities

Jonathan's main ability is Hamon, an energy produced through a special breathing technique. It has properties similar to sunlight, making it effective against vampires and the Pillar Men. It can also strengthen the body and slow aging. His techniques include Zoom Punch and various forms of Overdrive. Sunlight Yellow Overdrive, whose color is considered the closest to the sun's golden light, is a particularly powerful strike.

Zeppeli's final technique, Deep Pass Overdrive, passes his remaining life energy to Jonathan and greatly strengthens him. Jonathan also channels Hamon through Bruford's sword, Luck and Pluck. His power still depends on being able to breathe: Dio's attack on his throat during the honeymoon voyage cuts off his normal supply of Hamon.

05History

Story spoilers

Childhood

Jonathan was born in 1868. When he was a baby, his family's carriage fell from a cliff, and his mother died protecting him. When he was twelve, Dio was adopted into the Joestar family. Jonathan subsequently endured isolation, the disruption of his romance, and the killing of his beloved dog. His father was also subjected to a slow poisoning over an extended period.

Young Adulthood

In 1888, Jonathan uncovered evidence that Dio was poisoning his father and traveled to London, where he met Speedwagon. George died at Dio's hands while protecting his son, and Dio put on the Stone Mask to become a vampire. In December that year, Jonathan became Zeppeli's pupil and learned Hamon. He traveled to Windknight's Lot and defeated Dio, but Dio, reduced to a severed head, refused to give up. In February 1889, Jonathan married Erina. Dio ambushed them aboard their honeymoon ship, and Jonathan ultimately went down with the ship while holding Dio's head in his arms.
