03Background

Will Anthonio Zeppeli
Will Anthonio Zeppeli.

Zeppeli's surname comes from the British rock band Led Zeppelin. Curious about the unknown from childhood, he joins his father on archaeological projects at ruins around the world, traveling to places including Egypt and India.

04Appearance and Character

Zeppeli often wears a suit and hat, carrying himself with a gentleman's poise and composure. When he meets Jonathan in Britain, he immediately recognizes his exceptional potential to learn Hamon and takes him as a pupil.

05Abilities

Zeppeli uses Hamon, a technique that reproduces the properties of sunlight through a special method of breathing. It is particularly effective against vampires and the Pillar Men. His signature techniques include Zoom Punch and Deep Pass Overdrive, through which he passes all his life energy to his pupil.

He demonstrates that Hamon is more precise than brute force by sending it through a frog to break the rock beneath without harming the animal. Its other uses include healing and moving across water, although effective production still depends on controlled breathing.

06History

Story spoilers

While excavating Aztec ruins in Mexico, Zeppeli discovers the Stone Mask. During the subsequent Atlantic crossing, his father, the leader of the archaeological expedition, puts on the mask out of curiosity and accidentally activates its mechanism, becoming a vampire. He kills everyone on the ship except Zeppeli. While pursuing his son, he is caught by the sunrise and his body melts, allowing Zeppeli to survive.

Zeppeli then sets out to find a way to defeat vampires and the Stone Mask. At an Indian port, he meets a monk with extraordinary powers. On the monk's recommendation, he travels to Tibet in China to study Hamon under the monk's master, Tonpetty. Before Zeppeli learns the ultimate technique, Tonpetty warns that completing the training will lead to his death. Undeterred, Zeppeli finishes his training to atone for his father and put an end to the evil of the Stone Mask.

Later, he meets Jonathan in Britain and teaches him Hamon, joining Jonathan and Speedwagon in the struggle against the vampire Dio. To save Jonathan, he calmly accepts his fate and is killed by Tarkus, one of the dark knights Dio has summoned. Before dying, he transfers all his life energy to Jonathan through Deep Pass Overdrive. He has already contacted his teacher before the battle, enabling Tonpetty and his fellow pupils to come to Jonathan's aid.

07Legacy and Appearances

After Zeppeli's death, Speedwagon replaces his own blade-rimmed hat with Zeppeli's black-and-white checkered top hat, carrying on as a witness to the journey to defeat Dio. Once Dio is defeated, Speedwagon raises the hat above his head, symbolically allowing Zeppeli to complete the adventure as well. His son Mario and grandson Caesar are inspired by his spirit and follow in his footsteps, sacrificing themselves to clear the way for the Joestar family's future. His appearances include the 1987 Phantom Blood manga, the 2006 PlayStation 2 game, the 2012 television anime, and the 2024 musical.
