Because the author had not given the protagonist of Part 1 a rival-like companion, he reserved that role for Caesar in Part 2. Both Caesar and Joseph are Hamon users who inherit their forebears' legacy. The author wanted their Hamon styles to have distinct characteristics, with bubbles becoming Caesar's specialty.

04Appearance and Character

Background

Caesar is a Neapolitan. His grandfather, Will Anthonio Zeppeli, was a Hamon warrior who died because of the Stone Mask. His father, Mario, originally worked as a furniture maker, spending his life practicing Hamon and searching for the Pillar Men. After his father saves him and their misunderstanding is resolved, Caesar carries on his father's mission and becomes a Hamon warrior.

Appearance and Clothing

He has blond hair, green eyes, and purple birthmarks on his cheeks. He wears a headband patterned with alternating purple and orange triangles, feather ornaments beside his ears, and special combat gloves filled with a specially prepared soap solution.

Personality

Caesar admires his father as a child. After his father disappears, that admiration turns to hatred, and Caesar becomes self-destructive, even abandoning his surname for a time. Once he understands the truth, he takes pride in his father and family. He often seems proud and unapproachable, but treasures his friends and relatives and dreams of having a loving home.

05Personal Life

His catchphrase is “Mamma mia.” He collects lighters and is good at darts. His favorites include Russian beef stroganoff with rice, the color orange, and sunflowers. He dislikes country bumpkins, unreliable people, and insects.

06Abilities

Even during his time in the slums, Caesar can unconsciously use Hamon in combat. He later studies under Lisa Lisa to become a trained Hamon warrior. He creates bubbles from soap solution stored in his gloves and clothing and charges them with Hamon to attack. He can also use Hamon to control other people. His signature techniques include Bubble Launcher, Bubble Barrier, Bubble Cutter, and Bubble Lenses. Bubble Lenses refract sunlight to attack an enemy.

These are Hamon techniques rather than Stand powers. Their effectiveness depends on Caesar's breathing and circulation; severe injury and blood loss can stop him from producing enough energy. His bubbles provide both a way to carry Hamon and, in the case of Bubble Lenses, a means of directing the sunlight that the Pillar Men cannot withstand.

Early Life

Caesar's mother dies young, and his father leaves when Caesar is ten. After relatives swindle away the money intended for his living expenses, his personality changes drastically and he ends up in the slums. Around 1934, at sixteen, he follows his father to the Pillar Men ruins in Rome. His father dies saving him and asks him to take a message to Lisa Lisa. Caesar then takes up his father's mission.

Meeting Joseph and Visiting the Pillar Men

In 1938, Joseph travels to Italy to meet Caesar. They take an immediate dislike to one another at a restaurant and a fountain, only gradually acknowledging each other after testing their skills. Their friend Mark then guides them into the Pillar Men's underground chamber. Wamuu awakens and mortally wounds Mark, forcing Caesar to use Hamon to end his suffering. Caesar is defeated in his first encounter with Wamuu. Joseph then fights Wamuu and enters into the agreement involving the poison rings.

Hamon Training and the Final Trial

After finding Lisa Lisa in Venice, Caesar goes to the island to attempt the Hell Climb Pillar. He scales a marble column coated in flowing oil, reaching the top after sixty-one hours. He later defeats Messina in a contest on a rope stretched between two towers. Meanwhile, Joseph fights Esidisi. Caesar and Joseph then combine positive and negative Hamon to force Esidisi out and destroy him in the sunlight.

The Red Stone of Aja and the Battle with Wamuu

While tracking the Red Stone to a train at the Swiss–Italian border, Caesar and Joseph encounter Kars. Joseph recovers the Stone at the edge of a cliff but is left in danger. Caesar links icicles together with Hamon to save him. Later, ignoring warnings, Caesar goes alone to an abandoned hotel to avenge his family. He uses water vapor to expose Wamuu's apparent invisibility, then overwhelms him by directing sunlight with Bubble Cutter and Bubble Lenses. When Caesar's body blocks the light for an instant, Wamuu strikes and mortally wounds him. Before dying, Caesar takes the antidote from Wamuu's lip ring and threads his headband through the ring, leaving both for Joseph.

  • Against Wamuu: defeated in both battles.
  • Against Messina: victory.
  • Against Esidisi, working with Joseph: victory.

09Assessments

The narration emphasizes that although Caesar's body has died, his spirit lives on, and that he rests forever at twenty. Joseph's assessment develops from teasing to recognition of Caesar's loyalty and deep personal bonds. Wamuu praises Caesar's growth and his sunlight strategy with Bubble Lenses, describing him as a man as brilliant and dazzling as his bubbles.
