03Background

“Dio” means “God” in Italian, while his surname comes from actor Marlon Brando. He is the same age as Jonathan, having been born around 1868. His father, Dario, was a habitual drunkard with a cruel disposition, while his mother died young from overwork. This upbringing shaped his intense hostility and hunger for power.
04Appearance and Personality
Appearance and Clothing
Dio is handsome, with blond hair, fair skin, and three moles on his left ear. After taking Jonathan's body, he has a scar where his head joins the neck and the Joestar family's star-shaped birthmark on his left shoulder. In Part 3, he wears a headband with a heart-shaped ornament, gold earrings, and small heart-shaped fastenings at his knees.
Personality
Dio is arrogant, treacherous, coldhearted, and calculating. To obtain the Joestar inheritance, he pretends to get along with Jonathan for seven years while secretly poisoning his adoptive father, George. He is fiercely proud, values his composure, and wants to dominate others. After becoming a vampire, he regards humanity with particular contempt. Yet he also treasures his friendship with Pucci and has wept for his mother, who died from overwork.
05Abilities
Vampire Powers
As a vampire, Dio possesses superhuman strength and agility, the ability to drain blood, agelessness, immortality, and regeneration. He can create zombies and vampires, hypnotize others, implant flesh buds, and use the Vaporization Freezing Technique and Space Ripper Stingy Eyes. His weaknesses are sunlight, Hamon, and sufficiently intense ultraviolet light.
Stand Ability
Dio's Stand, The World, is a close-range power Stand that can stop time. At first, it can do so for only an instant. The duration gradually increases as the scars on his neck heal: before the final battle in Part 3, he can stop time for five seconds, rising to nine seconds after he drains Joseph's blood. Its range is about ten meters. Its ratings are A in destructive power, A in speed, C in range, A in stamina, B in precision, and B in development potential. Dio can also briefly use a spirit-photography ability resembling Hermit Purple, and his fusion with Jonathan's body gives him a connection through the Joestar bloodline.
06The Heaven Plan
Dio develops the Heaven Plan as a way to reach a power beyond The World. Pucci later pursues this ideal by accelerating time into a new universal cycle, where survivors would unconsciously know their destined futures and, in his view, find peace by accepting them. This is not a promise that everyone can freely rewrite fate. The requirements are the Stand The World, his trusted friend Pucci, the souls of thirty-six exceptionally wicked sinners, fourteen secret phrases, the courage to give up his Stand, and waiting at Cape Canaveral for the next new moon.
The plan survives Dio because Jotaro reads and burns his notebook but remembers its contents. In Stone Ocean, Pucci steals Jotaro's Memory DISC to recover those instructions. Made in Heaven is the eventual evolution of Pucci's Stand, rather than a form of The World that Dio uses in his battle with Jotaro.
07History
Story spoilers
Phantom Blood
Dio was born in the slums of London's East End. In 1880, he poisoned his biological father, and the following year he was adopted into the Joestar family. After his attempts to crush Jonathan failed, he concealed his intentions for seven years. In autumn 1888, he graduated at the top of his law class, stabbed his adoptive father to death, and became a vampire by wearing the Stone Mask. Jonathan defeated him by setting the Joestar mansion ablaze. That winter, Dio occupied Windknight's Lot and created a large number of zombies. In December, Jonathan defeated him in the castle, destroying his body. On February 7, 1889, he killed Jonathan aboard the honeymoon ship and took his body, sinking to the seabed with the vessel.
Stardust Crusaders
Dio remained dormant beneath the sea until awakening in 1983, then began seeking Stand users. In 1987, he met Pucci in the United States and gave him an Arrow. He also entrusted Pucci with a piece of his foot bone and told him about heaven and his notebook. In 1988, his Stand gained the ability to stop time. That November, Holy Kujo and Josuke Higashikata became critically ill because of their blood connection to Jonathan, prompting Joseph and Jotaro to set out to defeat DIO. In January 1989, the Stardust Crusaders reached Cairo. During the final battle, Dio killed Kakyoin and drained Joseph's blood, but Jotaro awakened his own time-stopping ability and killed him. His remains disintegrated in the next morning's sunlight.
Influence after Death
After Dio's death, the Bow and Arrows he left behind set the events of Part 4 in motion in 1999. His eldest son, Giorno, began the story of Part 5 in 2001, and Pucci initiated Part 6 in 2011. Dio's remains later gave rise to the Green Baby, which merged with the priest, ultimately leading to the Stand Made in Heaven and the acceleration of time throughout the universe.
08Character Song and Assessments
Dio's character song is “VOODOO KINGDOM,” performed by SOUL'd OUT for the theatrical Phantom Blood film. Hirohiko Araki described him as the ultimate evil, who must also possess the power to dominate others. Speedwagon called him evil from birth, while Zeppeli described his overwhelming evil presence as that of a tyrannical emperor.
