03Appearance

Polnareff is a tall, well-built man with a muscular physique. His silver hair is styled into a high flat top, with a receding hairline and notably no eyebrows. He also wears jagged earrings in the shape of a broken heart.↗↗

Stardust Crusaders

Polnareff wears a tight-fitting black tube top that leaves his shoulders bare, except for a single strap running diagonally across his chest to his left shoulder. He pairs this with armbands and light-colored pants, featuring pouches attached to his belt on both hips. Initially, his pants include an open-front skirt, but he discards it after the Joestar Group 's encounter with Forever. In the flashback recounting his first encounter with DIO, Polnareff is shown wearing a jacket with long striped lapels and rolled-up sleeves. Following his fight with Vanilla Ice, he loses two fingers on his left hand and all the toes on his left foot.↗

04Personality

Stardust Crusaders

Jean Pierre Polnareff is a boastful but honorable and well-meaning Frenchman. He hates being bored and taking the easier path. Even if it means he would get in danger, he is the type to go all-out and does whatever he can to fulfill his dreams.↗↗

Polnareff's most defining trait is his honor. His first appearance has him handicap himself on purpose by explaining his ability and fight his opponent Avdol in a terrain more suitable to the latter. Polnareff's honor is such that even under the control of DIO, he refuses to do something as dishonorable as attacking someone from the back. Adopting a chivalrous mindset, Polnareff is reluctant to flee from a fight or use dishonorable tactics, although he can be persuaded if the opponent is one he deeply hates like Vanilla Ice or DIO. He is in fact somewhat happy to see Chaka challenge him directly.↗↗↗↗↗↗↗↗↗

Vento Aureo

In Vento Aureo, Polnareff, due to his time infiltrating Passione and to the weight of his situation, has considerably matured to become a serious and focused individual, not showing any signs of his formerly cheery personality even when outside of combat, although he retains his penchant for bombast and somewhat crude comments. His experience allows him to offer very needed counsel in Giorno and the others' fight against Diavolo, being quick-witted enough to have correctly guessed the Boss's condition and being responsible enough to take on the duty of guarding the Arrow.↗

05Abilities

Silver Chariot

Polnareff's humanoid Stand is Silver Chariot, one of the fastest of all; utilizing a rapier in a flexible and deadly offense. The Stand is also capable of removing its armor to move even faster, to the point of creating after-images, and of launching its sword, with both techniques having their own drawbacks.↗

Chariot Requiem

In Vento Aureo, Polnareff develops Chariot Requiem, a Stand with the powerful ability to manipulate and alter souls, with the touch of the Arrow.↗

Mastery

Having been born with Silver Chariot, Polnareff is stated to have intensively trained with his Stand, with great results. Thanks to his training, Polnareff is able to expertly wield Silver Chariot and make it fight with the expertise of a seasoned swordsman, able to command it to slash or stab with great precision and timing. Although the sword is its main feature, Polnareff can also command his Stand to perform kicks in a pinch. Moreover, Polnareff has a habit of partially channelling Silver Chariot through his body, adding greater protection against attacks.↗

Ghost

In this state Polnareff appears to be stuck to Mr.President, but can still peep out of the Stand room. It is unknown if Polnareff can fully leave it or what the consequences of doing so would be. Polnareff is still able to be heard and seen by humans, though as is the case with most Ghosts, only by those who are Stand users.↗

Intelligence

Polnareff's tactical acumen is greatly impeded by his faults, such as mild arrogance, tendency to be distracted by women (especially pretty ones), and his general nobility of character which makes him slow in expecting treachery.↗

Swordsmanship

Polnareff's training with Silver Chariot and an off-hand comment about Chaka's amateurish sword stance suggest that Polnareff himself is a skilled swordsman. His skill is somewhat demonstrated when after being possessed by Anubis, he himself is able to overwhelm Star Platinum. The anime expands on that by giving him a typical fencing stance.↗

Hacking

After having been defeated by Diavolo, Polnareff went into hiding and developed computer hacking skills, allowing him to watch over numerous law enforcement databases unnoticed and communicate undetected by Passione with Bucciarati's Gang.↗

06Story

SPOILERS

Background

Polnareff was born in 1964 in the French countryside with his Stand, though he would not realize he had it until some time later. His mother died when he was still young, leaving him alone with his sister Chérie. Three years before events of Stardust Crusaders, his sister was ambushed, raped and murdered by J. Geil. To avenge her, Polnareff travels the world to seek him out but knows next to nothing about him except for his two right hands.↗↗↗↗↗↗

Stardust Crusaders (1988)

Hong Kong

Polnareff first appears in Hong Kong. Approaching the Joestar Group in a restaurant posing as a tourist, he soon reveals his plans to attack the Joestars, summons his Stand, Silver Chariot, and challenges Muhammad Avdol as his first victim. Polnareff reveals who he is and shows off Silver Chariot's great fencing skill by skewering five coins thrown the air and five flames in one thrust. Avdol answers in kind by remotely commanding the flames to disintegrate a table.↗

Arabia & the Red Sea

The Joestar Group reaches Abu Dhabi. Joseph decides to buy camels to cross the desert toward the village of Yarpline, but as they cross the desert, the group notices that the Sun is still up. It reveals itself as a powerful enemy Stand that bombards the heroes with lasers and they must hide under a rock with the scorching heat getting at them. Polnareff is the third to notice the enemy's hiding spot laughs alongside Kakyoin and Jotaro.↗

Arrival to Egypt (1989)

The Nile River, Egypt

The group meets with a helicopter envoy from the Speedwagon Foundation. The crew delivers some supplies but more importantly, bring Iggy, a dog Stand user. The dog jumps on Polnareff's head, tear his hair, and then farts on his face. Enraged, Polnareff sends out Silver Chariot but Iggy also summons his sand Stand, The Fool. The Fool is made of sand and easily neutralizes Silver Chariot. Unbeknownst to them, the group is targeted by N'Doul, another one of DIO's henchmen.↗

The Final Battle, DIO's World

On the staircase leading up to the third floor, DIO confronts Polnareff. DIO tries to persuade Polnareff to join his side but Polnareff refuses. As he goes up the stairs to fight DIO, Polnareff suddenly finds himself at the bottom to which an amused DIO suggests that he subconsciously stepped back in fear. Nervous, Polnareff realizes that he's experiencing a glimpse of DIO's power and summons Silver Chariot to attack. In turn, DIO summons his Stand, The World.↗

Vento Aureo (2001)

Before the events of Vento Aureo, Jotaro and Polnareff learned of the Arrows and began to investigate them. The anime adds that Jotaro searched through the Americas and Asia while Polnareff searched Europe and Africa. Carrying the Arrow he had taken from Egypt, Polnareff eventually made his way to Italy, but his investigation caught Diavolo 's attention.↗↗↗↗

His Name is Diavolo

Polnareff notices that time has skipped and realizes that Diavolo is nearby. The Boss of Passione confronts his foe. Despite having devised a way to detect King Crimson 's power by biting his finger and observe the blood drops, Diavolo is careful enough to avoid Polnareff's counterattack. As a last resort, Polnareff stabs Silver Chariot with the Arrow, hoping that it will be kept safe from Diavolo.↗

Sleeping Slaves

After all souls were put in the proper body, Polnareff maintains his grip on the world of the living by staying inside of Mr.President 's room. After Giorno collects the Arrow, Polnareff tells him to put it inside of the turtle, accepting the duty to guard this Arrow.↗

The Genesis of Universe

The Train from the Desert to Hell City

After the fight with N'Doul, the Joestar Group is forced to traverse the desert on foot with little remaining water, while being assaulted by the scorching heat and the blinding sunlight. Polnareff pompously proclaims his envy over his lack of melanin, which protects some of his allies from the sun. He also laments losing his beautiful voice due to the lack of hydration; according to him, many women have cried at his chansons back in Paris.↗

The Gravestone of Hot Sand

Polnareff, bruised and exhausted, inspects the north area of Al-Darb al-Ahmar in search of the Stand user who summoned the monsters attacking him. In spite of his vertigo, Polnareff musters all of his fighting spirit, preparing for another assault. He suddenly hears the sound of horses approaching, and is attacked by a Roman chariot. He acts too late, and his leg gets run over. Before even coming to his senses, the chariot knocks him out.↗

07Plot details

SPOILERS

Abilities / Chariot Requiem

Following his physical death, however, it is out of his control.↗

Abilities / Ghost

After being physically killed by Diavolo and Chariot Requiem switching and returning all souls back to their proper bodies, Polnareff's soul lingered on inside of the turtle Coco Jumbo 's Stand, Mr.President.↗

Relationships / Family

He spent years training his Silver Chariot and spent three years searching for the man who raped and murdered his sister who was J. It is shown in flashbacks that he took care of her since she was young and was particularly close to her, especially since their mother died when he was three. When Cameo's Judgement claimed to be a Genie, Polnareff had him bring back his dead sister and when she was about to kill him, he initially could not fight back because he thought she was his sister.↗

Relationships / Friends

The two did have a brief falling out when Mannish Boy attacked the gang with Death Thirteen and Polnareff didn't believe Kakyoin when he said the baby was the stand user, believing the journey had taken its toll on Kakyoin and made him crazy.↗

While Polnareff had the least interaction with Joseph, it was evident the two got along such as joking with each other during the Death Thirteen and Oingo Boingo Brother arcs.↗

Relationships / Enemies

Geil: As the man who raped and killed his sister, Polnareff greatly hated J. Geil to death.↗

However, once Hol Horse seemingly killed Avdol with J Geil's help, Polnareff's enmity with the gunman grew, and took satisfaction in rubbing J. Geil's death in Hol Horse's face once he and Kakyoin returned.↗

During their confrontation, Polnareff made three wishes, two of which were to bring his sister Chérie and Avdol back to life out of guilt over their death's. However, Judgement brings back false versions of the two who attack Polnareff, mocking him on his weakness and wanting to bring the dead back to life. Polnareff would remember his fight with Judgement for the rest of his life, even remembering it upon his death at the hands of Diavolo.↗

Vanilla Ice: Polnareff first encountered Vanilla Ice when he murdered Avdol with his Stand and planned on killing him and Iggy next. Initially running for his life blaming himself for Avdol's death, Polnareff's fear turned into hatred, determined to kill Vanilla Ice. Throughout the fight, Polnareff's anger boiled over fruitlessly attempting to kill Vanilla Ice while sustaining crippling wounds and helplessly seeing him beat Iggy to death.↗

Even after he avenged her sister's death, Polnareff chose to stay with the group to defeat DIO.↗

Diavolo: Polnareff investigated Diavolo in Italy after discovering the country's rising crime and death rates, but only took the full measure of Diavolo's dangerousness during a clash after which he was left for dead and miraculously survived. Polnareff was killed by Diavolo, only for his soul to be attached to Coco Jumbo after piercing his Stand with the Arrow.↗

10Relationships

CharacterRelationshipNotes
Chérie PolnareffYounger Sister↗

Family

Chérie Polnareff: Not much has been shown of their relationship. However, it is fairly obvious that he loved her dearly. Geil. He also carried a picture of her wherever he went.↗

Friends

Muhammad Avdol: Possibly his best friend throughout the journey, Polnareff initially met the fortune teller under DIO's control (as he had a flesh bud in his head) and challenged him to a battle. Avdol recognized his chivalrous soul and Polnareff was subsequently saved. Initially, Polnareff also thought less of Avdol when he learned that he ran from DIO rather than confront him, but Avdol's "sacrifice" considerably improved his view of him. After Avdol revealed he was alive, the two became great friends despite their opposite temperament. In fact a recurring theme for Avdol was that he often had to save Polnareff from danger such as with J.↗

Iggy: The two initially did not get along since Polnareff woke him up after a bumpy flight. Polnareff disliked Iggy's cocky and demeaning attitude and antagonized him frequently, causing Polnareff to be Iggy's most common target when it came to getting bitten and farted on. Despite this, during their fight against Cream, Iggy sacrificed himself to save Polnareff. Polnareff deeply mourned his sacrifice, admitting he initially thought Iggy was a stubborn shitty mutt but grew to love how stubborn he was and how he didn't get close to humans because it showed how proud he was, and it was this determination that allowed him to beat Vanilla Ice.↗

Enemies

J. Geil and spent years searching for him to get his revenge, eventually joining the Joestar Group to help him. Upon encountering him and his partner Hol Horse in Calcutta, J. Geil sent out his Stand to kill Polnareff and his allies, taunting him of the deaths of his sister and Avdol while he is free to continue his crimes. Once Kakyoin exploited Hanged Man's weakness, Polnareff finally got his vengeance when he had Silver Chariot wound his Stand and repeatedly stab J.↗

Hol Horse: Polnareff didn't think of much of Hol Horse initially, being only interested in the whereabouts of his partner J. Geil and underestimating his Stand.↗
