Within the story, his name comes from the Santa Ana winds; the real-world inspiration is guitarist Carlos Santana. Hirohiko Araki often names characters after rock bands or musicians, and the four Pillar Men's names correspond to Santana, AC/DC, Wham!, and the Cars.

03Abilities

Racial Abilities

He learns languages quickly. His cells can absorb vampires and other organisms, and he can secrete a digestive fluid. He can contort his body to pass through narrow openings, enter and control human bodies, and fire bullets, ribs, and other objects from within himself. Sunlight and ultraviolet light are his weaknesses, and Hamon counters him.

Combat Techniques

His Rib Blades, also described as exposed ribs, extend his ribs outside his body to attack. Each rib can rotate and change direction independently. He uses them to intimidate Joseph when Joseph provokes him.

05Character Profile

He is the youngest and lowest-ranking of the four Pillar Men, and the first to appear. While the other three traveled to Rome, he remained alone in Mexico.

06Story

Story spoilers

During his battle with Joseph, Hamon energy breaks him apart and he is dragged toward sunlight. He clings to Stroheim's leg, forcing Stroheim to sever it to save himself. Before being completely petrified, Santana enters Stroheim's body through the wound. Stroheim detonates a grenade to expose him to sunlight. Santana survives the blast, but Joseph finally turns him to stone by drawing him into a well where the water reflects the midday sun. He has also been used as an experimental subject by the German army. He has not truly died: the Speedwagon Foundation preserves him under ultraviolet light, and he can still absorb organisms that come near him.

07Character Assessment

Kars likens him to a guard dog and explicitly says that he should not be placed on the same level as the other three Pillar Men.
