03Appearance and personality

Personal background
Kira is unmarried and lives in the residential villa district in northeastern Morioh. He works diligently and competently at the Kame Yu department store chain. His ancestors included a samurai, but the family's fortunes began to decline in his grandfather's generation. By Kira's generation, all that remains is a tea-house-style residence in Morioh.
Appearance and clothing
Kira has blond hair and a thin face, and usually wears his work suit. Koichi Hirose describes him as more ordinary-looking than expected. Later, to conceal his identity, he takes Kosaku Kawajiri's face and fingerprints and lives under his name, acquiring black hair in the process. After awakening Bites the Dust, his supreme confidence in his ability is reflected in a new hairstyle with alternating black and white sections.
Personality
Kira longs for a quiet life and regards an existence as stable and unmoving as a plant as ideal. He avoids obsession with winning or losing, dwelling on worries, or making enemies who would keep him awake at night. To achieve this, he deliberately conceals his considerable intelligence and talents and treats everyone with disarming courtesy and gentleness. At school, he intentionally maintained third place in competitions and rankings. While posing as Kosaku Kawajiri, he resents the man's ambitions to get ahead. Despite his compulsion to kill, he remains convinced that he will live happily. His compulsive need for order extends to straightening his clothing even before committing murder.
04Daily life
Habits
Kira returns home no later than 8 p.m. He does not smoke and drinks only a little alcohol. He goes to bed at 11 p.m. and insists on eight hours of sleep, drinking a glass of warm milk and spending 20 minutes stretching before bed. Since 1975, he has collected his nail clippings and recorded their length, accumulating them at home. When desperate, he bites his nails, a habit dating from childhood.
Interests
Kira is a capable cook. His appearance and polished manner suggest a successful professional, making him popular with female coworkers, but he has no strong preference for women themselves and dislikes women with hair on their fingers. During dates, he thinks about how much he wants to go home. His favorite film is The Remains of the Day, and his preferred fashion brand is Gianfranco Ferré. He has a pathological fascination with women's hands, tracing his first sexual response to the hands in the Mona Lisa. This fixation drives his repeated murders. Every four or five years, his nails grow faster and his urge to kill becomes uncontrollable. He likes to talk with potential victims and ask their names and interests before killing them and taking a hand. Rubbing a woman's hand against his face gives him a sense of inner peace.
05Stand abilities
- Killer Queen: Destructive Power A, Speed B, Range D, Persistence B, Precision B and Development Potential A. This humanoid Stand can turn anything it touches with its hand into a bomb, detonated by pressing its right thumb. It has two detonation modes: it can destroy someone who touches the bomb while leaving the bomb-object intact, or make the object itself explode. Kira can choose which parts are destroyed. Destroyed matter becomes ash, and the explosions are silent. It can maintain only one primary bomb at a time, and an object turned into a bomb can explode only once. Its name comes from Queen's song Killer Queen.
- Sheer Heart Attack: Destructive Power A, Speed C, Range A, Persistence A, Precision E and Development Potential A. Killer Queen's second bomb is a single miniature tank released from the back of its left hand. It automatically tracks heat and explodes when near a target. Its exceptional durability allows it to withstand even Star Platinum, and Kira must retrieve it personally. Its name comes from Queen's Sheer Heart Attack.
- Bites the Dust: Destructive Power B, Speed B, Range A, Persistence A, Precision D and Development Potential A. Killer Queen's third bomb can be planted only in another person who has no Stand. If someone learns Kira's identity through the host, that person is attacked and explodes, and time rewinds by one hour. In the new loop, a previous victim is fated to explode at the same time even without learning the information again. If the ability is withdrawn after the death has occurred, that death remains permanent. Only the host retains memories of the loops. Events from before the reversal are fated to recur, although their exact form can vary. Its name comes from Queen's song Another One Bites the Dust.
Bites the Dust also limits Kira himself: while Killer Queen is planted in its host, he cannot summon it to defend himself. He must recall it and end that protection to fight directly, and he does not share the host's memories of the loops. His later air bombs are a combination of Killer Queen's first bomb with Stray Cat's compressed air, rather than a fourth innate bomb.
06Story
Story spoilers
Early life
On the night of August 13, 1983, Kira enters Reimi Sugimoto's home and kills her, her parents and her pet dog. Reimi and the dog become ghosts trapped in the alley where one must never look back. For 15 years, they work to persuade visitors to find the killer still living and murdering in Morioh. At an unspecified time, Yoshihiro Kira receives an Arrow from Enya, and father and son use it to awaken their Stands. In 1988, Kira graduates from D College's literature department and joins the Kame Yu department store in S City. He transfers to its Morioh branch in 1993. Throughout his 15 years of killings in Morioh, he repeatedly murders women to obtain beautiful hands, seeking a new victim whenever a severed hand begins to smell. By 1999, he has killed 44 women, excluding four killed after the main story begins.
His identity is exposed
In 1999, Rohan and Koichi enter the alley and meet Reimi, learning of the murderer hiding in Morioh. Later, Josuke's friend Shigekiyo Yangu mistakes Kira's bag containing a severed hand for his own lunch bag and takes it. Wanting to recover the hand and its newly purchased ring, Kira follows Shigechi to school and enters the sports equipment room with him, quietly taking the bag back. Shigechi uses Harvest to catch up with him. To preserve a peaceful night's sleep, Kira kills Shigechi with his first bomb, but before dying, Shigechi sends Josuke a button torn from Kira's suit through Harvest. Learning that the murderer is a Stand user, Jotaro follows the button to the shoe shop where Kira has his buttons repaired. Kira arrives to collect his clothing and discovers the investigators. To conceal his identity, he kills the owner with the second bomb and takes the suit bearing his name tag. Sheer Heart Attack gravely wounds Jotaro but is pinned down by Koichi's Echoes ACT3. Kira must return to recover it. As he is about to kill Koichi, Jotaro rises to stop him. Believing Jotaro unable to retaliate, Kira steps within Star Platinum's range and is defeated by a barrage of punches. When Josuke and Okuyasu arrive, Kira's attempt to pose as a bystander fails. He cuts off his left hand, leaving Sheer Heart Attack to act independently and delay them, then seizes the passerby Kosaku Kawajiri. At Cinderella Salon, he forces Aya Tsuji to swap his face and fingerprints with Kosaku's using Cinderella. By the time Josuke repairs Kira's severed hand and follows it to the salon, Aya has already been turned into a bomb. Kira, his left hand restored, escapes into the crowd of people leaving work with Kosaku's appearance.
Living as Kosaku Kawajiri
As Kosaku, Kira repeatedly practices copying his handwriting to adapt to his new identity. Shinobu Kawajiri accidentally kills a Russian Blue cat, and Kira buries it in the garden. Yoshihiro had pierced the cat with the Arrow while trying to create enemies for Jotaro and his allies; after death, it awakens a Stand that controls air. Kira fails to kill the resulting Stray Cat and instead secretly keeps it in the attic. As he settles into the household, he does not realize Hayato Kawajiri has recorded him imitating handwriting, hiding Stray Cat, gradually replacing shoes that do not fit Kosaku's shoe size, and eating shiitake mushrooms that Kosaku disliked. Suspecting something wrong, Hayato enters the attic while Kira is at work and discovers the air-controlling plant. Kira notices Hayato has forgotten his school cap, becomes suspicious and returns home. His private remarks in the attic confirm to Hayato that this man is not his father. On July 15, a couple repeatedly mocks Kira. Seeking both revenge and an outlet for his compulsion, he follows them home and kills them with his first bomb, leaving only the woman's hand. Hayato follows and records everything. This impulsive killing, together with Yoshihiro's warning that Rohan is investigating Kosaku, drives Kira to despair. Yoshihiro's Arrow pierces Kira again, awakening Bites the Dust. Kira places the bomb in Hayato and rewinds time one hour, undoing Hayato's death at his hands.
Bites the Dust
On July 16, his new power fills Kira with confidence, and he calmly styles his hair into a black-and-white swept-back look. Rohan notices something wrong with Hayato and reads his memories with Heaven's Door. Upon learning that Kosaku is Kira's stolen identity, he triggers Bites the Dust, is blown up, and time reverses. After Kira leaves, Jotaro and the others, who have arranged to meet there, recognize Hayato. Hayato tries to kill himself rather than endanger them, but Killer Queen automatically protects its host. When Jotaro and the others see Killer Queen, they trigger the bomb, die, and time rewinds again. After at least four loops, an elated Kira announces his own name as before. This time, Josuke and Okuyasu hear him because Hayato has called to wake Josuke and ensure he reaches the meeting place on time. This disclosure does not trigger Bites the Dust. To protect himself, Kira recalls Killer Queen before the fated explosions and resolves to kill the three. He takes Stray Cat and combines its air bullets with the first bomb, bringing Okuyasu near death and injuring Josuke. While trying to heal Okuyasu, Josuke fires glass that follows the blood spattered on Kira's clothing back to its source, piercing Kira's body. Yoshihiro, concealed in a photograph, helps Kira determine Josuke's position and distance and inflict serious injuries. Josuke again uses glass and blood to strike him. Kira drops his phone when wounded, revealing his location to Josuke. Jotaro ultimately prevents Kira from activating Bites the Dust, and Josuke and his allies defeat him. As a ghost, Kira enters the alley where one must never look back. Reimi tricks him into turning around, and he is dragged into hell.
07Theme music and battle record
Kira's themes, composed by Yugo Kanno, appear on Diamond is Unbreakable Original Soundtrack Vol. 2: Killer, First Bomb, Second Bomb, Another face Same mind and Third Bomb.
- Against Shigekiyo Yangu — victory: Kira first uses a bomb made from a 100-yen coin to leave him near death, then turns a doorknob into a bomb and destroys him completely.
- Against Jotaro and Koichi — defeat: Sheer Heart Attack gravely wounds Jotaro from a distance, but Echoes ACT3 immobilizes it. Kira returns and nearly kills Koichi, then falls to Star Platinum's punches.
- Against Stray Cat — inconclusive: The first bomb and an attempt to stamp on the plant both fail, while Stray Cat's air control leaves Kira struggling. He eventually defuses its hostility with a ball.
- Against Hayato, Josuke and their allies — defeat: Combining his power with Stray Cat's air bullets, Kira corners Josuke and Okuyasu. Josuke turns the battle with restoration and Hayato's information. Jotaro and the others arrive, and Jotaro prevents Bites the Dust from being activated.
- Against Reimi Sugimoto and her dog: After becoming a ghost, Kira enters the alley. Reimi tricks him into looking back, and he is dragged into hell.
