03Background

Toshikazu Hazamada
Toshikazu Hazamada.

Hazamada's Stand inhabits an artist's mannequin, the jointed figure used as a drawing reference. The story also identifies the Copy Robot, a gadget in Fujiko F. Fujio's Perman, as an inspiration for its concept.

04Appearance and personality

Appearance and clothing

Hazamada wears a modified school uniform whose fastenings consist of nine belts. The two sides of his collar combine to form the character 間, and each sleeve also has two belts. He has medium-length hair and wears eye shadow, or smoky eye makeup. Although he is stated to be 165 cm tall, all these clothing details remain when he is later drawn with exaggerated three-head-tall proportions.

Personality

Hazamada is gloomy, sullen and unpleasant, bullies the weak, is unpopular and easily overlooked, acts impulsively, and shows little inclination to reflect on his behavior. He is stubborn but not wholly inflexible, and does not give up easily. Rohan Kishibe considers him hopeless.

05Stand abilities

Surface resembles a wooden mannequin. When someone touches it, it can completely copy that person's appearance, voice and personality, with the sole visible difference being the cross-head screw in the middle of its forehead. Once transformed, it may argue with Hazamada in the copied person's manner, but remains loyal to him. Before it copies anyone, it is an ordinary mannequin without that borrowed personality. Its name comes from the American R&B and soul trio Surface. Its parameters are Destructive Power B, Speed B, Range C, Persistence B, Precision C and Development Potential C.

Copying also enables forced synchronization: when the duplicate and its subject face one another, Surface can make the original imitate its movements. Its disguise remains wooden inside, and damaging the mannequin does not automatically injure Hazamada. Those rules distinguish it from a free-standing duplicate with all of its target's powers.

06Story

Story spoilers

Hazamada attends the same school as Josuke Higashikata and Okuyasu Nijimura. He is a third-year student, belongs to the tennis club and likes manga. Although his stated height is 165 cm, he is drawn as short as Koichi when he later takes him to Rohan Kishibe's home. This is the original manga's use of cute, exaggerated three-head-tall proportions, rather than an effect of Koichi's Echoes.

After Keicho Nijimura's Arrow gives him a Stand, Hazamada uses it for revenge against a classmate, blinding the classmate's right eye. On reading his mind with Heaven's Door, Rohan finds him repulsive, concludes that drawing such material would never please readers, and calls him hopeless. Resenting Jotaro Kujo for having a stronger Stand, Hazamada tries to use Surface to manipulate Josuke into assassinating him. Surface's conduct along the way instead leads to Hazamada being beaten and hospitalized.

07Friendship with Koichi

After the failed assassination leaves him in hospital, Hazamada develops a friendship with Koichi Hirose. The two become friends who share their admiration for Rohan Kishibe, and Hazamada eventually returns to ordinary life in Morioh.
