03Personality and work
Ryohei is humorous and relaxed with his family, but takes the safety of Morioh seriously. He has served as a police officer for 35 years without losing his commitment to the town. He continues to work night shifts and is familiar with its residents.
His affection for Tomoko and Josuke gives the Higashikata household a warm, ordinary side before the Stand-related violence reaches their home. His sense of duty also provides Josuke with an example of protecting people without seeking recognition.
04Story
Story spoilers
Years earlier, Ryohei arrested Anjuro Katagiri. In 1999, Anjuro returns as a dangerous Stand user. Josuke captures Aqua Necklace in a bottle, but the Stand makes the liquid appear like alcohol and tricks Ryohei into opening it.
Aqua Necklace attacks Ryohei before Josuke can protect him. Josuke repairs his grandfather's injuries with Crazy Diamond, but discovers that the wounds closing does not bring him back to life. Ryohei is already dead: Crazy Diamond can restore a damaged body, not return a departed life.
The loss strengthens Josuke's resolve to protect Morioh from dangerous Stand users. The family leaves Ryohei's room as it was while Tomoko struggles to face his absence.
05Live-action version
Jun Kunimura plays Ryohei in Diamond is Unbreakable Chapter I. The film expands his part, showing more of his community work, family life and desire to keep Morioh safe. His inability to solve the Sugimoto family's murders is developed into a personal regret. These expanded scenes belong to the film adaptation.
