Police

Diamond is Unbreakable

On May 8, 1999 at 4 PM, after Koichi encounters Tamami Kobayashi and returns home from school, he kicks a sleeping Police to check if he is alive. Police just opens one eye but doesn't react.↗↗↗

Later, Koichi tells Yukako Yamagishi that his mom wouldn't let him have another pet since the Hirose family already has Police. At night, Police is shown sleeping peacefully outside when Yukako kidnaps Koichi. When Koichi pees in his pants in front of Yukako, he feels that even his dog Police would lose respect for him.↗↗↗↗

Background

Police was born in distant foothills where cool winds blow and raised by breeders named Mr. and Mrs. Nakata. His breeders had eloped following a scandalous double affair, fleeing Tokyo in search of a secluded life together. However, their peaceful escape was short-lived, as rumors about them spread in their community. In response, the couple bought a large piece of land and started raising dogs.↗↗

During his time at the breeding facility, Police shared a room with a beagle named Blur. Unlike the lazy Police, Blur was an energetic, curiosity-driven dog who refused to return inside once taken out for a walk. Police observed that Blur's constant activity made him perpetually hungry, whereas Police found that his own desire for sleep far outweighed his appetite.↗

As a puppy, Police once dreamed of rolling around in sunlit harvested wheat stalks, which he recalls as having a fragrant aroma and a pleasant texture against his paw pads. He also recalls dreaming of eating golden, freshly steamed sweet potatoes that had been carefully peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces for him. Mrs. Nakata would often find him in these states, remarking to her husband that Police was "smiling" or "drooling" in his sleep.↗↗

Missing Link

On March 24, 2001 in the morning, Josuke Higashikata goes on a walk with Koichi and Police so he can learn the usual route, since he would be house-sitting for the Hirose family during their vacations. Police remains at the Hirose residence while Koichi and his family leave for their respective trips to Italy and Okinawa. Left behind, he spends the day in his usual routine of sleeping outside, not knowing how much time passed.↗

Once inside, he sits near the entryway until Rohan carries him into the living room. Rohan goes to call his editor on the phone, and Police begins to fall asleep. When Rohan returns to the room later, he stumbles and is about to collapse onto Police. Police panics and thinks that it is over for him, since he is half-asleep and could not dodge in time. However, Rohan activates Heaven's Door to avoid crushing him, which launches Rohan upward.↗↗

Spiritus Mundi

The next morning, Police wakes up completely lethargic, sporting a high fever and refusing to eat his dog food. Worried he might waste away, Rohan carries the heavy, limp dog to the animal hospital. The veterinarian arrogantly dismisses his condition as stress from being watched by a stranger, but Rohan realizes the dirty ham Police ate the night before caused a severe stomach strain.↗↗

Sleep Trance

The following morning, Police is in an excellent mood. He goes for a walk with Rohan, but walks so sluggishly that he constantly forces Rohan to stop and wait for him. Upon returning to the Hirose residence, Police lets out a sigh of exhaustion and falls into a deep sleep.↗

Unbeknownst to him, the ham he ate two nights prior contained a fragment of a Stand Arrow that was scattered around Morioh. This awakens his Stand, Sleep Trance. Due to his lack of control, the initial awakening causes poltergeist-like winds and beastly roars to echo through the house, terrifying a visiting TV crew who were following Rohan to interview him. In his dreams, Police realizes he can float around and possess people's bodies.↗↗
