The Pitch-Black Old Man (黒い爺さん, Kuroi Jī-san), also called the Withered Pitch-Black Elder (黒く干涸らびた老人, Kuroku Hikarabita Rōjin) or the Grinning Black Monkey (にたにた笑う黒猿, Nita-nita Warau Kurozaru), is the main antagonist of the short story " Yuyanagidai ", part of the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: Short Story Collection.
Revived by the prayers of Yuyanagidai's elders, he exists only to silence anyone who causes a disturbance in the neighborhood.

01Basic information
02Appearance
The Pitch-Black Old Man's overall appearance is easily mistaken for a monkey or a spider. He wears no clothes, and his rotted, peeled skin is uniformly discolored pitch-black. His limbs are thin and emaciated, but also abnormally long; their joints are contorted horrifically, with his knees pointing upward and his toes pointed backward, and his overall form resembles a cricket's or a grasshopper's more than a human being's. His bald head lacks any facial features, exposing gaping cavities where his earlobes, nose, and eyes should be. His only distinguishing feature in the darkness is his crooked, off-white teeth within the crescent-shaped slit of his mouth.↗↗↗
03Personality
As a monster born of the neighborhood elders ' wishes, the Pitch-Black Old Man exists with only one goal in mind: ensuring silence throughout Yuyanagidai. To that end, he attacks without any grudge or will of his own, switching targets without hesitation if a larger disturbance presents itself. However, he seems to derive a degree of pleasure from his victims' agony, as his mouth is seen curling into a grin as he strangles Rohan Kishibe.↗↗
04Abilities
As a ghost, the Pitch-Black Old Man exhibits many of the properties of a revenant: he can appear before ordinary people, and feels no pain if he is attacked. In addition, he also demonstrates a degree of selective intangibility when he leaps at an ambulance, passing straight through its front windshield on the way in and the driver-side door on the way out.↗↗
Disturbance Elimination
As the protector of Yuyanagidai's silence, the Pitch-Black Old Man manifests in the immediate vicinity of anyone or anything causing a commotion within the borders of Yuyanagidai. In cases where multiple disturbances appear at the same time, the Pitch-Black Old Man is capable of quickly incapacitating multiple targets at once; otherwise, if a louder disturbance surfaces, the elder focuses on that disturbance instead and completely forgets its previous target.↗↗↗
Selective Visibility
The Pitch-Black Old Man appears only to those he has designated as targets. To any witnesses, his attack takes the form of an invisible force, with the victim's reaction being the only trace of its existence. If the Pitch-Black Old Man's target changes, any previous targets will still be able to see him until he disappears.↗↗
05Story
SPOILERS
Background
Although the Pitch-Black Old Man's previous life remains largely unknown, Rohan Kishibe theorizes that he lived alone in Yuyanagidai, reaching old age before his death. After his burial, his corpse was left to rot underground for some time. Eventually, fed up with the noisy kids that lived in the neighborhood, the elderly residents began praying for Yuyanagidai to become a silent town. They prayed anywhere they could, from Buddhist altars and Jizo shrines to the graves of people they never knew.↗↗
One year prior to Rohan's encounter with him, the Pitch-Black Old Man would menace a boy named Ken twice before finally attacking him. Afterward, Ken was left unable to speak, for fear of the monster's return.↗↗
Yuyanagidai
One day, at a park in Morioh, Rohan meets Ken and his mother. The mother explains what happened to Ken and asks Rohan if he knows of any similar stories, which he denies. Before Ken leaves, Rohan asks him to draw the monster that attacked him, which he does. Mistaking the child's drawing for a "grinning black monkey," Rohan sets out for Yuyanagidai to unravel the mystery behind him.↗↗
When he arrives in Yuyanagidai, Rohan bears witness to a student on a bicycle being attacked by the "monkey," although he cannot see him. Suspecting the elders around him to be controlling the "monkey," Rohan loudly summons Heaven's Door, summoning the Pitch-Black Old Man to attack him. Reacting too late, Rohan glimpses his attacker's true form as he struggles to escape his chokehold. He summons Heaven's Door to defend himself, but his spirit falters just before he can reach the monster.↗
Realizing the Pitch-Black Old Man's true nature, Rohan turns the elders into books with Heaven's Door and writes the command, "I always talk loudly," into each of them. As he is doing so, he receives a call on his smartphone, causing the Pitch-Black Old Man to pounce on him once more. Before the monster can finish the job, however, the old people wake up and begin screaming. The Pitch-Black Old Man immediately strangles most of the elders, pinning the last one down as he pleads for mercy.↗↗
