02Appearance

Mika is a young, short woman of average build. She has a distinctive, rounded dark blonde mushroom cut and dark eyeliner. She also wears a gold septum ring.↗

She dresses in a somewhat gothic and vintage-inspired style. Her outfit consists of a long-sleeved, high-necked black blouse featuring lace around the collar, which she wears over a red turtleneck. Around her waist, she wears a thick, dark obi with grey stripes. Attached to this sash are decorative gold chains adorned with vintage cameo pendants. She is also seen wearing a dark blue shawl draped over her shoulders, which is decorated with large circular motifs filled with vibrant red, yellow, and blue stripes. Additionally, she wears opaque yellow tights accompanied by dark red flat shoes.↗

03Personality

Mika is a deeply obsessive individual who is extremely interested in the conversations of others, willing to commit horrible crimes to create the "greatest manga." Driven by a desire to be the "ultimate queen of dialogue," she relies entirely on stealing the voices and lives of other people to compensate for not being able to speak on her own and her own lack of genuine artistic expression. Her manga's art, paneling, and visual composition are completely mediocre and derivative, as she only excels at copy-pasting the stolen conversations of others. She compulsively licks electronic devices and audio equipment containing voices, including TVs and vinyl records.↗↗

Her ambition strips her of any empathy, completely disregarding the autonomy of others. Over several years, she goes so far as to abduct eight citizens and permanently disable them by cutting out and eating their tongues, allowing her to control them and use their voices for herself and her characters. She forces the people whose tongues she stole to work for her and attend to her needs at her mansion. She also subjects her own brother, Soshi Saion, to the same fate, allowing her to control him as well.↗↗

Mika is insecure about her lack of true artistic talent. When her editor Kyoka Izumi points out that her work lacks genuine expression and that she is nothing more than a fraud who copy-pastes stolen lives, Mika becomes completely infuriated and violently lunges at her with a pair of scissors. Her obsession with voices ultimately becomes her downfall; when presented with an IC recorder containing thousands of voices, her compulsive need to consume them overrides her reasoning, leading to her self-mutilation.↗↗

04Abilities

Gift

Mika possesses a supernatural ability centered around the consumption of saliva and tongues, which allows her to perfectly mimic and control voices. By licking anyone's saliva or even an audio recording, Mika can temporarily absorb their voice. If Mika physically eats a person's tongue, the voice theft becomes permanent. She uses this to flawlessly switch between the voices of different individuals, applying their exact tone, cadence, and conversations into the speech bubbles of her manga. Furthermore, consuming a victim's tongue grants her complete control over that individual, rendering them mute and forcing them to become her subservient "assistants."↗↗

Ventriloquism

Mika is skilled at ventriloquism, speaking through her brother Soshi Saion. However, Kyoka Izumi notices that something is off about the way Soshi speaks.↗↗

05Story

SPOILERS

Background

Mika was unable to speak since birth. She often had bitter experiences regarding voices when she was young, so Soshi protected her. While her exact origins remain a mystery, a song sung in her mansion heavily implies her past. The song describes a child wondering where their parents are, making dinner together, eating a cow, and subsequently starting to moo.↗↗

Realizing the potential of her ability, Mika began stealing the voices of real people to fuel her manga career since at least April 8, 2016. Years later, Kyoka Izumi found a piece she posted on social media and fell in love with her talent. Kyoka then immediately contacted Mika and had her debut in Shonen Jumbo with the series Midhope, becoming her editor. Mika would continue abducting people and stealing their tongues to create the incredibly realistic dialogue for her series.↗↗

Meeting With Her Editor

During a meeting with Rohan Kishibe, Kyoka boasts about Mika, her newly discovered hit manga artist. However, Rohan expresses skepticism, pointing out that while the dialogue is realistic, the art is completely derivative and copied. Offended by the accusation of plagiarism, Kyoka travels to the Saion estate unannounced to prove Rohan wrong. When Kyoka arrives at the massive mansion, she calls Mika's phone and explains that she is there.↗

After Soshi greets her, Mika suddenly appears next to Soshi, surprising Kyoka. Soshi invites Kyoka to eat lunch with them. Mika begins eating what Kyoka presumes to be a dish of beef tongue. Kyoka tells Mika about how the readers of Midhope have praised her dialogue. She asks if Mika could sign a stack of volumes for reader giveaways, but Soshi, who is actually Mika speaking using his voice, declines since they are still eating. After finishing one tongue, Mika is served another one.↗↗

Kyoka's suspicions grow when she uses opera glasses to spy on Mika licking a vinyl record. She heads to that room and peers inside, but Mika has Soshi exit and block her path. He asks her to leave before walking away. Kyoka grows even more suspicious of Mika plagiarizing. Sneaking into that room, Kyoka finds a room devoid of manuscripts but filled with saliva-covered audio equipment. Elsewhere, Soshi is cleaning Mika's ear while Mika sings a song with his voice.↗↗

Tongue Pursuit

Having caught her in the act, Mika confronts Kyoka. She sticks her finger into Kyoka's mouth and licks it, revealing her true ability. Mika confesses that she ate Soshi's tongue and has been using his voice the entire time. Declaring her intention to take Kyoka's tongue to add to her collection, Mika chases the editor through the mansion.↗↗

Suddenly, Kyoka's stalker boyfriend, Kansuke, arrives outside the mansion looking for her. Mika answers the intercom using Kyoka's stolen voice, lets him inside, and brutally knocks him out by smashing a ceramic item over his head. Using Kansuke's voice, she tricks Kyoka into opening the door of the room she was hiding in. Mika, Soshi, and the silent assistants pin Kyoka down to extract her tongue.↗↗

Mika obsessively begins licking the recorder. However, her supernatural ability attempts to absorb all thousands of voices simultaneously. The sheer overwhelming influx of voices causes Mika's brain to short-circuit. Thrashing in sheer agony, Mika accidentally bites off her own tongue and screams in horror. Mika frantically picks up and devours her own tongue, only to lifelessly fall to the ground afterward. Soshi then picks up Mika and wanders off, abandoning the estate and Mika's assistants.↗↗

Following the incident, the news of the "Tongue-Cutting Manga Artist" goes public, causing a massive scandal. Midhope is immediately canceled and all volumes are recalled. However, Mika and Soshi have completely vanished before the police can apprehend them, with their current whereabouts unknown.↗↗
