02Appearance
Kansuke is a tall Japanese man in his 30s with an unkempt appearance. He has messy, voluminous, and wavy dark hair that sticks out wildly in all directions.↗
His primary outfit consists of a muted burgundy, military-style field jacket with chest pockets. Underneath the jacket, he wears a dark button-up shirt paired with a tie of the same color, along with dark trousers. A notable accessory is a small, pink flower pinned to the left chest pocket of his jacket.↗
03Personality
Kansuke is a possessive, controlling, and distrustful boyfriend. Frustrated by Kyoka prioritizing her work as an editor over their relationship, he resorts to manipulative behavior, such as recording their conversations and using them to guilt-trip her when she forgets promises they made. He also displays eccentric behavior, including letting out unsettling "fufufu" and "eheheh" laughs while speaking with Kyoka, and cheerfully humming and prancing to the restroom during his date despite Kyoka being uncomfortable with him. His obsession goes as far as stalking Kyoka across town for an entire day just to confirm whether she is actually working.↗↗
Despite his creepy and restrictive tendencies, Kansuke has a normal sense of self-preservation. After surviving a life-threatening supernatural encounter with a murderous manga artist, he is left traumatized. He is protective of Kyoka and grabs her so they could escape from Mika's mansion, preventing her from going back to check on Mika. However, he ultimately decides to break up with Kyoka, concluding that while he likes her, he can no longer "keep up" with her chaotic and dangerous lifestyle.↗↗

Background
As a newspaper reporter, Kansuke interviewed thousands of people over the course of his career. He kept all of these interviews stored on a single IC recorder, amassing an enormous archive of different voices. At some point, he began dating Kyoka Izumi.↗↗
Date with Kyoka
Kansuke takes Kyoka on a lunch date to a Chinese restaurant. During the meal, he asks her about their plans to see a movie the following Saturday. When Kyoka forgets and tells him she has work, an annoyed Kansuke pulls out his IC recorder. He plays back a recording of Kyoka making the exact same excuse the previous week.↗↗
Stalking Kyoka
Distrustful of Kyoka's excuse about having to work, Kansuke secretly stalks her for the whole day on Saturday, March 21. He first watches her meeting with Rohan Kishibe behind the bushes at a café, where Kyoka laughs about Kansuke probably having a hard time at work without his IC recorder. After Kyoka storms off from her meeting due to being annoyed with Rohan, she ends up tripping down some stairs. Kansuke is watching her in the trees and screams when she falls.↗↗
Kansuke then follows Kyoka all the way to the remote estate of the manga artist Mika Saion. Later seeing Kyoka nearly fall out of a window, he screams again, but quickly ducks behind plants and crawls away so she wouldn't see him. After some time, a worried Kansuke rings the mansion's intercom. Mika, using her supernatural ability to perfectly mimic Kyoka's voice, answers the intercom and lets him inside.↗↗
While Kansuke remains unconscious on the floor, Kyoka is cornered by Mika and her mind-controlled assistants. To save herself, Kyoka pulls Kansuke's IC recorder out of her bag and stuffs it into Mika's mouth. Because Mika's ability forces her to absorb the voices of whatever she licks, she simultaneously absorbs the thousands of interviewees stored on Kansuke's device. The sensory overload short-circuits Mika's brain, causing her to accidentally bite off her own tongue.↗↗
Shortly after Mika collapses, Kansuke wakes up. Horrified by the situation, he grabs Kyoka and the two frantically escape the mansion together. Kyoka attempts to go back as she is worried about Mika, but Kansuke prevents her from going. Kansuke and Kyoka later contact the police, reporting the assault and the discovery of the mutilated assistants inside the estate.↗↗
Sometime later, Kyoka is back at the cafe with Rohan. Rohan asks Kyoka what happened to her boyfriend. Kyoka reveals that Kansuke broke up with her, having told her that he liked her but could no longer "keep up" with her chaotic life. Rohan gives an amused scoff at this revelation. Although briefly annoyed by Rohan's reaction, Kyoka quickly brushes the breakup off and immediately returns to her work.↗↗

06Behind the Character
According to director Yutaro Seki, the idea for Kyoka Izumi having a boyfriend came from Hirohiko Araki, who was credited with script cooperation for " Kyoka Izumi Will Not Be Silenced." The character was initially conceived as Kyoka's fiancé, who had appeared in the manga, but the production team felt that this would be too drastic a development considering the flow of the series, so he was changed to her boyfriend instead.↗↗
Seki stated that Kansuke ultimately grew into a larger character than expected. Rather than focusing on Kyoka's boyfriend himself, the original intention was to show Kyoka's current status: she has a boyfriend, but is so absorbed in her work that she leaves him aside. However, Kansuke became increasingly distinctive during production thanks to Isao Tsuge 's costumes, the hair and makeup work, and Atsushi Hashimoto's performance. Co-director Kentaro Hirase similarly described Kansuke's expanded presence as a "welcome miscalculation," noting that the character became more interesting than expected.↗↗
