02Appearance

Masuma is a short woman with long, straight black hair. She wears black-rimmed glasses. When she visits Rohan 's house, she wears a dull-colored hoodie with long pants. Later, when she escorts Rohan away from Happeita's house, she wears a Pink Dark Boy T-shirt given away in a magazine ten years prior, which bears a cover illustration from the series.↗↗↗

03Personality

Jun Masuma presents herself as a refined woman with refined tastes who is nonetheless very close with her "friend," Happeita Kaburagi.↗

Having grown up in a strict wealthy family, she is more overtly interested in refined activities such as ballet and piano, and is repulsed by things she considers vulgar, like manga and anime. But in reality, she is a massive fan of manga, particularly Pink Dark Boy. Ever since she discovered the manga at age 11, she would secretly buy volumes and merchandise of Pink Dark Boy out of her love for the series. Nonetheless, to avoid her parents' wrath, she repressed her love of manga, blaming her possession of it on an imaginary friend named Happeita Kaburagi.↗↗

In spite of Happeita's violent nature, Masuma allows him to do as he pleases, defending him from any resulting harm: she often apologizes for his actions on his behalf, and occasionally even convinces her parents to pay to have him forgiven. Nonetheless, Masuma does seem hesitant to engage in conflict, as seen when she visits Rohan to warn the manga artist about Happeita.↗↗

04Abilities

Double Personality

In truth, Happeita Kaburagi is a split personality of Jun Masuma, who she calls her "imaginary friend." Rohan likens their situation to that of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. When Happeita's personality takes over, the power of suggestion causes Masuma's appearance to change quickly and drastically into that of Happeita, physically transforming her from a lithe, dark-haired woman into a muscular, white-haired man.↗

Happeita was first conceived when Masuma's parents found an issue of Weekly Shonen Jump she bought for herself: Masuma made up the excuse that she was lending them to Happeita, denying any personal interest in the "vulgar" activity. Her denial was so powerful that Happeita manifested as a separate person within her, purging Masuma's very soul of "his" passion, as seen when Rohan reads her with Heaven's Door.↗

As Happeita reveals to Rohan, both he and Masuma are fully aware that they exist within the same body, and are fully content to let each other do as they wish. Happeita, however, seems to have a finer degree of control over their condition, as Masuma is unable to prevent him from waking up even under orders from Heaven's Door. In addition, whenever Happeita senses that his soul might be in danger, Masuma's soul automatically surfaces to take the damage in his place. As such, he is naturally protected against Heaven's Door, as his pages hide themselves within Masuma's whenever the Stand is used on him.↗↗

SPOILERS

Background

Jun Masuma was born in Saitama Prefecture to a wealthy family. As a child, Masuma was very interested in manga, but her strict parents disapproved of what they considered to be a vulgar distraction. Nonetheless, she began saving up her allowance, and one day, at age eleven, she went out and bought an issue of Weekly Shonen Jump without telling her parents. She secretly brought the magazine home and read it; she was particularly fond of the chapter of Pink Dark Boy Part 6 included in the issue.↗

Happeita became a huge fan of Pink Dark Boy in particular. Masuma bought many Pink Dark Boy volumes and pieces of merchandise "for Happeita," which she hid in a nearby storehouse. At the same time, Happeita's violent nature began to surface, and he would often send people who made fun of Rohan's manga in front of him to the hospital. Masuma was usually able to clean up after Happeita's mess by apologizing on his behalf; failing that, she would convince her parents to pay to have him forgiven.↗

One day, Masuma's parents found out she was keeping manga for herself. To punish her, they burned one of her manga volumes in front of her. This pushed Masuma's resentment of her parents, along with Happeita's, over the edge. One month before the autograph session for one of Rohan Kishibe 's artbooks, Happeita set fire to the family's house, killing Masuma's parents in the process. Masuma was able to avoid suspicion for the murder and inherited their wealth.↗↗

The Case of the Fan Happeita Kaburagi

After meeting Rohan Kishibe at an autograph session, Happeita moves to Morioh and begins stalking the author. Rohan is eventually forced to order Happeita to keep a reasonable distance from him, unaware that Masuma's soul is taking the order in his place.↗↗

Some time later, Jun decides to pay Rohan a visit, supposedly to apologize for Happeita's behavior and warn the manga artist about him. Overcome with curiosity about Happeita, Rohan invites Masuma into his house; he is delighted to hear that she isn't a fan of his, as he would prefer an unbiased account of Happeita's actions. Rohan serves her rooibos tea before turning her into a book with Heaven's Door. The manga artist reads Masuma's pages, but only finds Masuma's cover story about Happeita.↗↗

Eventually, Happeita kidnaps Rohan, but not before the author tries ordering him to stay 3 m (9.8 ft) away from him and to "let him go." Rohan is taken to Happeita's recently-purchased villa, where Happeita hopes to force him to draw an exclusive manga. When Happeita eventually recedes, Masuma becomes subject to Heaven's Door's orders. She frees Rohan by giving him the key to his handcuffs and letting him climb a rope to escape Happeita's basement through a skylight.↗↗↗

Rohan eventually escapes Happeita's pursuit. Shortly afterward, Happeita is arrested and convicted for the murder of Masuma's parents, and their shared body faces at least 30 years in prison.↗↗
