01Basic information
02Appearance
Emiko Torose is described as a tall and slender young woman in her early 20s. According to Shinji Mizuno, she is the type of person who would stand out even against the backdrop of a city. She has large eyes and long, black hair. Emiko's features are said to be almost perfectly symmetrical, and her striking presence is only enhanced by her upright, proud posture.↗↗
Usually, she is seen wearing an old-fashioned one-piece dress. When she confronts Rohan Kishibe the night before the ritual, she is dressed in the traditional robes of a shrine maiden.↗↗↗
03Personality
Emiko presents herself as a mysterious, eerie woman with a predatory, manipulative streak.↗
When she first meets Shinji and Rohan, Emiko is aloof and cautious toward the two, playing up the drama of the Unseen Ritual's rules. The faint pity in her eyes and the regret in her sigh suggest her misgivings about the ritual. When she later notices Rohan researching the ritual on the family inn 's computer, Emiko decides to silently observe Rohan from behind and scare him by unplugging the computer. Rohan describes Emiko's gaze toward him as piercing, her eyes shifting side-to-side with machine-like precision.↗↗↗
However, it is later revealed that Emiko's behavior toward Rohan was part of the act surrounding Gokedani 's annual ritual. In truth, Emiko had conspired with the other residents to lure Shinji to the village and seduce him. She researched Shinji's background and took advantage of his interest in ancient history to create websites that would pique his curiosity. When Rohan confronts her about her actions, she dismisses her manipulation as the village's way of attracting outsiders in times of need. She ultimately treats Mizuno as a convenience, almost taking pride in the village's ability to summon whatever she wants from the outside world.↗↗
04Story
SPOILERS
Background
Emiko Torose was born to Kaori Torose and her husband in the village of Gokedani. She stays in Gokedani her entire life, and eventually finds work as a web designer.↗
When Shinji Mizuno books a seat at a nearby famous soba restaurant, Emiko learns about him from the restaurant. She invents the name "Unseen Ritual" to pique Shinji's interest, the name being homophonous with his own. She then creates and publishes several websites outlining a fake history of the Unseen Ritual and describing it as a longstanding tradition.↗↗
The Unseen Ritual
The day before the ritual, Rohan and Shinji take a stroll through the village and eventually see Emiko walking through a soba field. Shinji falls in love with her at first sight, but Rohan impatiently asks her about the ritual. She only tells him that the ritual is not to remain in their eyes, ears, hands, or minds. The two visitors are distracted by the 5 P.M. bells, and she leaves without them noticing.↗↗
That night, Emiko goes out to prepare for the ritual alongside her father and the other residents. She returns to her family's inn to fetch her belongings, but sees Rohan researching the ritual on the inn's computer. She scares the manga artist by unplugging the computer before properly introducing herself and reminding him about the rules of the ritual.↗↗↗
The next day, Shinji attends the Unseen Ritual. The details of the ritual remain a mystery, save for the use of sake. Shinji himself is made to believe that Emiko was going to be sacrificed during the ritual, but that he was able to save her and permanently alter the ritual from that moment forward. Shinji thus falls even deeper in love with Emiko. When Shinji returns to the inn, however, Rohan grasps the village's true power and drags Shinji into their car.↗↗↗
At the end of the year, Shinji gives in to his feelings and resigns. He returns to Gokedani, where he marries Emiko and conceives a child with her. Soon after New Year's Day, Rohan pays the village a visit and meets Emiko once more. He confronts her with his theory about the ritual, which she indirectly confirms. Emiko comments that the village has a way of attracting outsiders it deems necessary.↗↗
