02Appearance
Derek is an older, heavyset man with a prominent belly. His most defining facial feature is a long, thick mustache that droops down well past his chin. He has long, curly hair falling past his neck.↗
Derek wears a wide-brimmed hat featuring a large shield-shaped badge reading "SHERIFF" pinned to the front crown. His typical attire consists of a patterned vest on top of a long-sleeved shirt, riding chaps, and a necktie, with a standard US Marshal star badge pinned to his left breast. He also has shield-shaped sheriff badges on his shoulders, wears a gun belt, and carries a rifle.↗
03Personality
Derek is a highly professional, observant, and fair lawman who adheres strictly to the laws and unwritten codes of the American West. Despite the brutal nature of his job, he maintains a level head. When Gyro Zeppeli uses the Spin to make a pickpocket shoot himself, Derek calmly assesses the situation and lets Gyro go, declaring that since both parties agreed to a fair duel, no laws were actually broken. He is also highly pragmatic and protective of the public peace; when discovering a gruesome mass murder during the race, he deliberately keeps newspapermen away from the crime scene to prevent a mass panic.↗↗↗
He holds immense respect for Mountain Tim, frequently relying on the cowboy's skills to apprehend criminals who have bounties.↗↗
In the light novel Lonesome Tim, Derek trusts Tim's character unconditionally, willingly deputizing him to act as an agent of the law to apprehend dangerous criminals like Reed Whipman and Clem Brown. Derek is shown to be highly amicable and easily swayed by Tim's philosophy of "respect," though Tim jokes that Derek is a lightweight drinker who will likely forget their conversations once he gets drunk.↗↗
04Story
SPOILERS
Steel Ball Run
In 1890, Sheriff Derek is overseeing the San Diego Beach area during the 1st Stage of the Steel Ball Run. Prior to the race's start, Gyro Zeppeli engages in a shootout with a thief. A bystander then calls for the sheriff's intervention. Derek arrives and asks them what's going on. After observing the aftermath, Derek figures out that it was a consensual shootout and lets Gyro go, telling the crowd that it was a fair fight and that no laws were broken.↗↗
During the 2nd Stage of the race, Derek intercepts Steven Steel and his wife Lucy Steel, forcing them into a carriage and bringing them to a remote area of the desert. He reveals that he kept the press away because he discovered a gruesome crime scene: three racers (Mark Becker, David Hagen, and Paul Lukather) have been murdered, their intestines dragged out by a horse and lined up perfectly straight in the sand.↗↗
Derek tells Steven that they need time to investigate and suggests delaying the race by at least an hour. When Steven refuses, insisting the race has become too big to stop, Derek reveals he expected that response and has a backup plan. He introduces Mountain Tim, vouching for the cowboy's incredible track record and character. With Steven's approval, Derek officially deputizes Tim, tasking him with finding the culprit.↗↗
