02Appearance

Pocoloco is a dark-skinned man of below-average to average height and slim or medium build. He sports a horseshoe mustache.↗

Throughout the race, Pocoloco wears a light, cropped tank top and pants, which sport a brick-like pattern. He is also seen wearing a harness, knee high boots, and a classic leather aviator helmet covered with distinctive elliptical pieces.↗

03Personality

Pocoloco is an optimistic, cheerful, and happy-go-lucky man who drifts through life at his own pace. He is not bitter over his poor background, but instead clings to a simple belief that his circumstances can turn around if fortune finally comes his way. Pocoloco's belief in luck is the core of his outlook. After being told his fortune will dramatically improve within the next two months, he becomes openly confident and acts as if his success is already guaranteed, talking himself up as an extraordinarily lucky man and interpreting events through that lens. Consequently, he lies on the ground and idly counts clouds, deciding he'll live an easy life rather than working.↗↗↗↗

Pocoloco's confidence can become reckless. Unlike other racers who rely on technical equestrian skills or their abilities, Pocoloco relies entirely on blind faith in his own luck. He takes dangerous risks with little hesitation, pushing forward as if nothing can hit him, and treating near-disasters as things that will simply work out. Once, he even takes the risk of his horse galloping full speed through a dense forest with his eyes closed. His decisions are usually improvised or instinctive rather than planned, with other racers like Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli viewing his behavior as irrational or impossibly fortunate.↗↗↗↗↗

Pocoloco often yells out "Yo!". He also frequently exclaims joyful variations of "UH OH" when he experiences good luck. This is changed to "OH YEAH" or "Yeah, baby!" in VIZ Media 's English publication.↗↗

04Abilities

Stand

Hey Ya! is a Stand that cheers Pocoloco on and serves as a guide for him, taking full advantage of its user's absurd amount of luck.↗

Horseback Riding

Pocoloco is a competent horse rider who, thanks to his luck, becomes a serious competitor in the Steel Ball Run race. During his first appearance, Pocoloco shows an affinity with horses when he is able to guess that a mare is pregnant and at which stage her pregnancy is just by looking at her droppings. While he doesn't have the raw talent or the special skills of other top competitors, Pocoloco has tremendous luck and an absolute confidence, in no small part thanks to Hey Ya!. This gives him the possibility to boldly overcome obstacles in his way and stay a serious competitor throughout the entirety of the race.↗↗↗

05Story

SPOILERS

Background

Pocoloco was born in Georgia in 1869. On September 20, 1890, Pocoloco headed down to the city to gamble. After losing, he met a fortune teller on the side of the road who told him that he is at the opposite of his life's most inauspicious moment. He would reach the greatest peak of his life over the next two months and would have a 1 in five billion chance of good luck.↗↗↗

Steel Ball Run

On September 23, 1890, Pocoloco happily lazes around counting clouds instead of doing any work. His grandfather scolds him for this, mentioning that they were given a month to plow a new field in the woods and that he managed to negotiate a pay raise from $1,000 to $1,200 for Pocoloco. Pocoloco initially refuses to work on swampland. However, he flips around to read the newspaper he was lying on top of and sees the Steel Ball Run race's entry fee is also $1200.↗↗

The 1st Stage

Excited, Pocoloco cannot sleep the night before the start of the race and sleeps in on the fateful morning of September 25. When he wakes up, he nervously looks around the empty camp before learning the truth from a nearby SBR worker. Luckily, the passage of the thousands of horses have smoothed the ground, making his ride extremely comfortable in the first minutes. For a moment, Pocoloco still has doubts about his luck.↗↗

This shortcut enables Pocoloco to easily reach the head of the group, where he rides neck to neck with Johnny Joestar, taking time to call his riding "lazy". When Gyro Zeppeli decides to head into the forest to cut down on his riding distance, Pocoloco follows suit, confidently shutting his eyes and riding straight into the forest, believing that his luck will carry him all the way.↗↗↗

Around the downhill dash segment of the 1st Stage of the race, Pocoloco means to endure the slope and build up his energy. However, his Stand, Hey Ya!, appears and criticizes his idealistic strategy, telling him to "remember the cow", have faith in his luck, and charge forward. Seeing the hand of his Stand sink into his own gives him confidence, and Pocoloco begins by taunting Gyro and charging forward in the downhill dash.↗↗

Pocoloco abandons the hide and resumes riding his horse with the advantage of having his horse rested somewhat. Hey Ya! tells him to run full speed ahead. During the final stretch, Hey Ya! tells Pocoloco to swerve to the left and inadvertently uses a hidden branch as a springboard to launch himself ahead. However, it is Gyro who crosses the finish line first.↗↗↗↗

The 2nd to 5th Stages

Pocoloco continues the Steel Ball Run, stocking up with plenty of supplies when the 2nd Stage begins. In the anime, Pocoloco is among the first racers to reach the first watering hole 30 miles into the Arizona desert, by the time the first day ends. He is seen resting alongside Sandman and Diego Brando.↗↗↗

He maintains a consistent and high-ranking performance throughout the race, being one of the top competitors and always being in the top ten racers of any given stage. He finishes ninth in the 2nd Stage, fifth in the 3rd Stage, second in the 4th Stage, and first in the 5th Stage.↗

The 6th Stage

Near the end of the 6th Stage, Johnny and Gyro notice that Pocoloco is in the lead and worry that they'll lose if he gets another 100 points. Pocoloco suddenly changes directions and crosses over the ice, which is risky in case the ice breaks. Gyro wonders if Pocoloco found the "Natives' Route", a trail that was made by floating logs under the ice so that the ice wouldn't easily break.↗↗↗↗

The Final Stage

Pocoloco manages to finish the race unscathed. During the Final Stage, Pocoloco places second at this stage and overall. However, " Diego Brando " mysteriously disappears and is thus disqualified, making Pocoloco be named the winner of the Steel Ball Run race and win the $50,010,000 prize.↗↗
