02Appearance

All of the yokai have bulging, shriveled eyes and cracked, bloodless skin in their true forms. The yokai whose human name is Gunpei Kamafusa has a shaved head and wears a polo shirt with shorts. His daughter, Kiriko Osato, has braided pigtails and wears a striped dress. When Kiriko shows her true form to Rohan Kishibe, the corners of her upper lip extend below her mouth. She has several fangs, a long, sharp tongue, and sharp nails. Gunpei's other child, Kai Osato, is a young boy with short, spiked up hair. He wears a T-shirt, shorts, and socks.↗

03Personality

Thus, their witness suffers from guilt as they think they were responsible for murdering the person. After that, the yokai possesses the witness while its own body bleeds forever. By exploiting human love and spiritual weakness, it forces humans to attend to their needs, ensuring the yokai doesn't need to bear any manual labor, responsibility, hardships, or other struggles itself.↗↗

04Abilities

Postmortem State

Although their skin would shrivel, it would not rot after several years nor have a stench. If water is poured on them, their skin would momentarily return to how it used to look when the body was alive. They are also still capable of reproducing with a human in this state.↗↗

Possession

The possessed victim then attends to their every need.↗↗

In the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan TV Drama, there are other yokai who are also capable of possessing anyone who wanders into Mutsu-kabe Hill, doing so for other purposes than reproducing. One of them possesses Yoma Hashimoto, making him obsessed with running and working out. Another possesses Masazo Kinoto, latching onto his back. Its goal is to convince Rohan to return Mutsu-kabe Hill, since he bought the land. Rohan learns that they are selective in who they possess, as Kai Osato does not possess Kyoka Izumi.↗↗↗↗

05Story

SPOILERS

Background

According to Rohan Kishibe 's research, the yokai is from possibly thousands of years ago, living in Mutsu-kabe Hill. Their only purpose is leaving descendants. Rohan suspects that there may be others around the world, dying in front of someone on purpose. Gunpei Kamafusa is one of them, who dies in front of his lover, Naoko Osato. Naoko drinking his blood in an attempt to make the blood stop leaking out of his body leads to the yokai impregnating her with his descendants.↗

Mutsu-kabe Hill

After learning about Gunpei's story, Rohan investigates the region around Naoko Osato 's house to discover his goal, suspecting him to be a yokai. Rohan comes across a young girl, who tells him she's not allowed to talk to strangers and runs away. Rohan tries to catch her, but she ends up falling on the ground and hitting her head on a rock, bleeding profusely like Gunpei did when he died.↗

Rohan discovers that the girl is also a yokai, who tried to die in front of him in order to possess him. With Heaven's Door, he writes one last memory before the girl dies: "I don't know Rohan Kishibe. Even if I meet him, I won't see him". The yokai briefly shows her true form in order to possess Rohan, but stops her attack and returns back to being alive as an ordinary girl after being unable to see him.↗↗

TV Drama

In the TV Drama adaptation, there are additional yokai aside from Gunpei and his children. Mutsu-kabe Hill is actually a "border" between two locations, where "things" like the yokai can cross over into. Since the mansion there had been abandoned, the yokai legend was eventually forgotten. However, the Osato family moving into the mansion thirty years prior acted as a catalyst that re-opened the border.↗↗

One of the yokai possesses Yoma Hashimoto when he runs into Mutsu-kabe Hill while jogging. Since then, he undergoes a transformation and becomes obsessed with training his body, going as far as murdering others who get in his way.↗↗

Another one possesses Masazo Kinoto, which Rohan initially suspects might have been accidental. Masazo was annoyed that the landowner of Mutsu-kabe Hill sold the land to Rohan so he took back an expensive melon that he brought the landowner as a gift. He then got lost on the way back and threw the melon away, before getting possessed by a Clinging Yokai. The yokai latches onto his back until he goes to Rohan's house, threatening to kill him if anyone were to see his back.↗↗

The story of Gunpei and his daughter are mostly the same as the manga. However, the drama adds an additional scene with his son, Kai, being together with Kyoka. Expecting that Kai may try to kill himself in front of Kyoka, Rohan rushes to Kyoka's side to save her. When he arrives, he sees that Kyoka is carrying Kai on her back. However, the boy is still alive and well, and simply just got tired of walking.↗↗
