02Appearance

Mountain Tim is a man of average to above-average height, average build and has light hair. In the manga, his mullet is drawn to look permed while in the anime it has a much straighter texture. He later acquires a scar crossing his face.↗

He wears a stereotypical range of cowboy attire, consisting of a large hat, a wide-collared top exposing his upper chest, a neckerchief or a scarf, gloves, a belt with a gun holster on the right side, and boots with spurs. His hat has a zebra print with a miniature cow's skull as a decoration, while the clothing on his upper torso and his neckerchief have a leopard print; in the manga, his gun holster also has a leopard print. His belt buckle is round and bears his initials, "MT". Finally, he wears a sheriff 's badge in the shape of a five-pointed star on his left side.↗

03Personality

Mountain Tim is confident and composed, with a strong sense of responsibility toward others. Sheriff Derek describes him as a well-liked cowboy with friends throughout the American West. Tim is unwilling to overlook the murders of his fellow competitors, explaining that many of the racers are his friends and that he cannot race with peace of mind while a murderer is among them.↗↗↗

Tim takes a practical, encouraging view of Stand abilities. He rejects the idea that his power is a curse, instead regarding it as a latent ability that enables him to confront danger. He willingly shares his knowledge with Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli, explaining the nature of Stands and warning them about the Devil's Palm.↗↗↗↗

In Lonesome Tim

As a teenager, Tim is proud of his talents and dismissive of those he considers less skilled. He values independence and the freedom to explore more than the security of a well-paid job. His confidence and unwillingness to compromise alienate his fellow soldiers, and he initially rejects Wyre 's advice to respect their experience, insisting that his life and accomplishments are his own concern.↗↗

04Abilities

Stand

Mountain Tim's Stand, Oh! Lonesome Me, allows his lasso to separate his own body or another person's body it connects into pieces, move them along the rope, and reassemble them. This movement is restricted to the rope itself, limiting how far the separated parts can travel. Tim uses it to move his body while entangled with Johnny and Gyro, extend his reach through a vent to rescue Lucy, and move his gun-holding hand along his rope during his fight with Blackmore.↗↗↗↗↗

He first manifests the ability in 1875, at the age of sixteen, while serving with a cavalry reconnaissance unit in the Arizona desert.↗↗

Equestrianism & Horseback Riding

Mountain Tim is an experienced cowboy who is introduced as traveling 4,000 kilometers through pasture each year with 3,000 cattle. His reputation makes him a favorite before the race begins. Riding Ghost Rider in the Sky, he finishes the first stage in fourth place and earns 35 points. Horses also lower their heads when he approaches, which Sheriff Derek describes as a sign of respect.↗↗↗↗

Lasso Handling

Tim handles his lasso with considerable precision. He can pick a flower while mounted on his horse and collect a bloodstained button as evidence, placing it into a glass bottle with the rope. He also uses it to restrain Benjamin Boomboom when the latter attacks him while disguised as Johnny.↗↗↗↗

Observation & Deduction

While investigating the murders, Tim examines hoofprints to assess the suspected killer's horse and route. He notices an unusual gait and distinguishes the culprit's tracks from those of Mrs. Robinson 's horse by their horseshoe markings.↗↗↗

During his encounter with Oyecomova, Tim identifies the danger of removing the pins created by Boku no Rhythm wo Kiitekure. Despite his injuries, he warns Gyro that releasing a pin causes an explosion and deduces that a pin can be safely reinserted into its original hole, allowing Gyro to neutralize a bomb attached to his hand.↗↗

Abilities in Lonesome Tim

Tim uses Oh! Lonesome Me in a variety of ways. He secretly removes a cheating gambler's revolver and avoids a knife strike by separating his hand, then uses the detached hand to seize the man's face. Against two robbers, he moves his gun-holding hand behind them along a rope and shoots their hands to disarm them. He can also continue speaking through a detached mouth: leaving it behind to distract Reed Whipman, he moves the rest of his body away and uses a separated arm to carry Little Bear out of danger.↗↗↗↗

05Story

SPOILERS

Background

In 1875, sixteen-year-old Mountain Tim served in an army platoon exploring uncharted territory in the Arizona desert. The sixteen soldiers became lost in a Devil's Palm, where their compasses ceased to work, the surrounding landscape changed, and the ground moved beneath them. Their horses died and the soldiers collapsed from dehydration.↗↗

Steel Ball Run

Racing in the SBR

Mountain Tim enters the Steel Ball Run and attracts attention as one of the favorites because of his cattle-driving experience. He crosses the finish line in the 1st Stage in fifth place, but officially places fourth and earns 35 points because Gyro Zeppeli is demoted from first to 21st place.↗↗↗

Pursuing a Murderer

After three participants are murdered along the racecourse, Sheriff Derek asks Tim to investigate while continuing the race. Tim agrees, explaining that many of the racers are his friends and he cannot ignore their deaths. At the scene, he identifies tracks left by a horse with a distinctive notch in the center of its horseshoe. From its agitated movements near the bodies, Tim infers that the horse has witnessed bloodshed and its rider is the murderer.↗↗↗

A Cowboy's End

In Kansas City, Lucy calls Tim for help while trapped inside a government building. Tim reaches her through a ventilation shaft by moving his detached hand and arm along his rope. He has Lucy hold onto the rope and pulls her out of the building.↗↗

Later References

Luke reports to Funny Valentine that the intruder at the government building was Mountain Tim and that Blackmore has stopped responding after tracing a call to a location five kilometers outside the city. Valentine regards Tim as a minor concern and concludes that someone else was responsible for the intrusion at the rooftop pigeon coop. He turns his attention to finding a traitor among his own personnel.↗↗

Lonesome Tim

Background

As a teenager, Tim worked for a powerful rancher in Wyoming, initially performing menial chores. Wanting to advance to working with the cattle, he secretly practiced horseback riding, lasso throwing, and shooting a revolver every day. His abilities were eventually recognized, and less than two years after beginning work at the ranch, he was promoted to serving as a bodyguard.↗

The Devil's Palm

In 1875, at sixteen years old, Tim serves in the U.S. Army's 6th Cavalry Special Reconnaissance Unit during an expedition through the Arizona desert. His background and confidence make him unpopular among many of the soldiers, particularly Willie, a senior soldier who frequently provokes him. While riding through the desert, Willie mocks Tim's stamina and challenges his reputation as a skilled bodyguard, claiming that he could not hit a distant saguaro while riding.↗

Bounty Hunting

In the years following the expedition, Tim becomes a well-known cowboy and occasionally assists Sheriff Derek in pursuing wanted criminals across the American West. In 1881, at Derek's request, Tim participates in a large-scale operation against a gang of robbers led by the former sheriff Reed Whipman. The operation results in the arrest of eleven members of the gang, but Reed manages to escape. Six months later, Tim assists Derek in tracking down another bounty target.↗↗

Reed Whipman's Attack

Upon reaching the Rocky Mountains, Tim and Little Bear discuss their lives as travelers. Tim explains that he normally wanders alone outside of cattle-driving season and has no place he considers a permanent home, prompting Little Bear to observe that they are similar in that regard. They eventually reach a village, but its inn has been fully occupied by Steven Steel and a crew searching for the Yeti, forcing them to camp nearby.↗↗

After the 2nd Stage

In 1890, shortly after withdrawing from the Steel Ball Run due to the injuries he sustained during his battle with Oyecomova, Tim travels east by train while recovering from his wounds. He meets a miner named Turner, who recognizes him as the famous cowboy Mountain Tim.↗
