02Appearance

Initially, Mizuo is a young man with an average build. He has short, light hair with four long spikes of hair protruding from the front. At some point in his luxury years, he takes on his servant 's appearance and identity as a middle-aged man with short hair and a mustache.↗

Film Appearance

In the film adaptation, his post-surgery appearance is that of a plain Japanese man, which lacks a mustache and has slicked back hair instead. Mizuo wears a black coat and pants over a white shirt. He also wears a dark red tie as well as a hat, and he carries an umbrella. His design is based on the painting The Son of Man by René Magritte.↗↗

03Personality

When he was younger, Mizuo was a hard-working man, too busy for relationships. However, despite this work ethic, he disdained working at the food market. When Sotoba approaches him asking for food, Mizuo becomes irritated, describing him as lazy and lashing out. He demands that the vagrant works for his food like he does, being cruel as the vagrant carries bags around. Mizuo lives his next few years in fear of the spirit's vengeance.↗

Mizuo is quite clever, being able to outwit Sotoba's vengeful spirit by swapping identities with his servant with plastic surgery and having him take the fall instead. During his luxury years, he's able to invent sweets that become very successful, and lives a privileged life with a loving wife. However, he could never be truly content under the spirit's curse due to his anxiety over the ghost's incoming vengeance. Mizuo never felt joy until he had a daughter, and with a stray thought of happiness, enables the spirit to manifest.↗

Film Personality

The film adaptation of Mizuo greatly expands on his personality. In the film, Mizuo is presented as a selfish and ruthless man who has taken on a pessimistic attitude solely to ward off his curse.↗

04Story

SPOILERS

Background

When Mizuo was 24 years old, he was a common worker who carried bags of corn for hours. One day, an Asian vagrant named Sotoba begged him for food, not having eaten for five straight days. The man was frustrated at the vagrant, and made him carry the corn bags in exchange for his food. The vagrant was crushed by the heavy bags. His spirit swore revenge on the man that was to come at his happiest moment.↗

After that, Mizuo had great luck. He received money from relatives and had the idea to process corn into corn flakes and popcorn. The idea was a big hit and he became a rich man, the master of a mansion with several servants. He married a model, and they eventually had a daughter named Maria.↗

At a Confessional

Mizuo later goes to a confession booth to confess his sins, now bearing the weight of two people's deaths. He confesses to Rohan Kishibe, who had mistakenly entered the priest side to research the church. As the man exits the booth, it is revealed that both Sotoba and Tamiya's spirits swear revenge on him, vowing to watch him around the clock to make sure he never tricks them again. Rohan watches him leave with curiosity, and decides to interview him later if given the chance.↗↗

Film History

In the movie, Mizuo's past is altered from the original one-shot. Mizuo was a Japanese who aimlessly travelled the world. In Venice, someone stole his funds, forcing him to pick up work there as a demolition site worker. Because he was alone and a foreigner, the workers there exploited him. One day, as he went to work, Mizuo saw the vagrant Sotoba being thrown out of his workplace.↗

Mizuo's life turned around as a string of luck made him more and more successful. However, he couldn't feel any joy because of the anxiety he felt. The movie changes the reason of his fortune from a successful pop corn sweet to Mizuo's investments being very successful, including a glass processing company. Mizuo married a model and had a daughter with her, Maria. He hired a conman named Tamiya to switch faces with him once and trick Sotoba's ghost.↗

When Sotoba's ghost attacked, Mizuo had already taken on Tamiya's face and was thrown aside and thus could safely observe the real Tamiya's ordeal against Sotoba. When the ghost was satisfied at having won his wager and killed Tamiya, he left Maria's body and Mizuo picked her up. Unfortunately, when Mizuo stumbled upon Tamiya's corpse, Tamiya's vengeful ghost cursed him a second time and promised he would taste despair the moment Maria would be at her happiest.↗

From that point on, Mizuo became truly obsessed with avoiding happiness and notably controlled Maria's entire life so that she could not feel her greatest joy. Mizuo became a gloomy man obsessed with causing bad luck for himself, divorced his wife but kept custody of Maria. During her youth, Mizuo constantly told Maria to avoid being too happy and passed on his habits to Maria. However, Maria eventually fell in love with a man, Lorenzo Grimani, and the two soon planned to marry.↗

Later, one of Mizuo's men shows Lorenzo Grimani being friendly with a woman and goes to Maria's home to show photos of the two together to persuade her that Lorenzo is cheating on her. Maria fully trusts Lorenzo and thus Mizuo tries to dissuade her to marry by appealing to her affection for him. Maria hesitates and Mizuo snatches her spare wedding dress to get rid of it. Rohan, who had also fatefully met Maria and learned about their relationship, confronts Mizuo on top of Maria's haunted manor.↗

Later, Mizuo hears from his man that Lorenzo and Maria have hastened the wedding. He goes to the scheduled church to stop the ceremony but Rohan confronts him. Rohan urges him to reject the curse's fortune, pointing out his own improbable luck since reading the confessor. Such as a winning lottery ticket landing at his feet. The confessor thus reveals a revolver and attempts to shoot himself, but it fails to fire when pointed at his own head, even though all chambers are loaded.↗

Mizuo starts to panic, knowing that the hour draws near, and rushes to the church, followed by Rohan. Just after Maria and Lorenzo say their vows, one of the hired men opens fire. Maria throws herself in front of Lorenzo, taking the bullet for him. Devastated, Mizuo starts repeating to himself that he has been saved from the curse, alas seemingly at the cost of his daughter's life. He eventually flees as ghostly laughter echoes. Mizuo is last seen wailing in an alley, flanked by the two ghosts.↗
