Background
Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus Christ down from the cross after his crucifixion and prepared it for burial. Three days later, Joseph witnessed his resurrection. Jesus thanked Joseph but announced that he would be going East. When Joseph asked if he would ever see him again, Jesus simply drew a map of the Americas with nine spots marked with stars before departing.↗↗
Joseph became a missionary and went on many journeys. He documented the map and kept the information close at all time. Eventually, he founded the Glastonbury Abbey in southwest England, the oldest Christian monastery. He died on the island of Britain and was presumably buried with the map. He was later posthumously recognized as a saint.↗
During the 16th century, Joseph's map was stolen from Glastonbury Abbey by an unknown assailant and by 1889 was located in the British Parliament, where it was stolen by Funny Valentine.↗↗
